Our entrées arrived, and we ate without talking for a few minutes. The silence wasnât awkward but comfortable, like old friends. Only she was way prettier than Huck and Trapper.
âWhat made you choose Emerson Pass?â I asked.
A faint smile lifted the corners of her mouth. âI saw an article about Emerson Pass in a travel magazine featuring the wedding of the actress Lisa Perry. Do you know who she is?â
âSure.â Everyone knew the actress Lisa Perry. She was everywhere lately. âIsnât her husband part of the firm who built Jamieâs inn?â
âYes, thatâs him. Heâs good friends with Jamieâs brother, Trey. This magazine had a feature with photographs from Lisa Perryâs wedding. One of them was of the bride and groom coming out of our church. Red door and all. Lisa said sheâd had her heart set on a wedding in Emerson Pass after she saw an article in a magazine featuring the church and lodge as great places for destination weddings twenty years ago. Can you imagine? As if that werenât inspiration enough, I took one look at her wedding photos and decided to move to Emerson Pass and open my wedding planning business. So I did.â
âWhat is it about wedding planning that you love?â Truthfully, the profession sounded hard. âAll those brides and their mothers canât be easy.â
Her brows knit together, causing an adorable crease just above her nose. âWhatâs not to love? A wedding planner gives every bride the chance to be a princess for the day.â
âSo, youâre a romantic?â I asked. How was it possible after what sheâd experienced as a child?
âI guess so. Romance novels were one of the first things I discovered after I left Briar Rose. All these books about people falling in love! I couldnât get enough. I learned a lot from those books.â She flushed and dipped her chin, before stabbing a piece of chicken. âI mean about pop culture, not the other.â
âRight.â I hid a smile behind my hand.
Tiffany poked her fork into the avocado and popped it into her mouth. Goodness, that mouth! Plump and pink like raspberries.
âDo you still love it?â I asked. âWhen thereâs enough work?â
She poured dressing from the ramekin over her salad. âI do, yes. But people are meaner than I thought theyâd be.â
âService industries can be rough that way.â
âYes, and Iâm too sensitive.â She tossed her salad with her fork. A droplet of oily dressing popped onto the table.
âWhat?â I asked softly. âWhat are you thinking about?â
She studied her salad. âIâve been thinking about going to the FBI and telling them what I know. For Matthew and for my mom.â Her lips trembled until she pressed them together. âI owe them that much.â
âIf thatâs what you want, you should do it.â
âI might know something that could help. Iâm not sure I can live with myself if I donât at least try.â She glanced behind her at the television before returning to her salad. âIt scares me to think of going in there.â
âIâll take you. Iâll go with you.
